I've come across two sets of guidelines for determining what your minimum body measurements should be. The first is based on your wrist measurement, and the second is based on your height. By taking the average of these two formulas, a male can have a challenging yet realistic guide for minimum body measurements.
The first method is based on the wrist measurement. Measure your wrist, and then use this number to calculate other body parts using the following formulas:
Body Part | Formula |
---|---|
Chest | Wrist measurement times 6.5 |
Hips | Chest measurement times .85 |
Waist | Chest measurement times .70 |
Thigh | Chest measurement times .53 |
Neck | Chest measurement times .37 |
Upper Arm | Chest measurement times .36 |
Calves | Chest measurement times .34 |
Forearms | Chest measurement times .29 |
For example, based on these formulas, someone with a 6 1/2 inch wrist measurement would come up with the following minimum body measurements to shoot for:
Body Part | Minimum Measurement | Formula |
---|---|---|
Chest | 42.25 inches | 6.5 * 6.5 |
Hips | 36.00 inches | 42.25 * .85 |
Waist | 29.50 inches | 42.25 * .70 |
Thigh | 22.25 inches | 42.25 * .53 |
Neck | 15.75 inches | 42.25 * .37 |
Upper Arm | 15.25 inches | 42.25 * .36 |
Calves | 14.25 inches | 42.25 * .34 |
Forearms | 12.25 inches | 42.25 * .29 |
The second method is based on height. You start with the following base height and body measurements:
Category | Base |
---|---|
Height | 5'2" |
Calf | 14 inches |
Upper Arm | 14 inches |
Neck | 14 inches |
Chest | 38 inches |
Thigh | 21 inches |
Waist | 28 inches |
To calculate what your minimum body measurements should be, for every inch over 5'2" that you are, you ad 1/4 of an inch to the calf, upper arm, and neck measurements; ad 3/4 of an inch to the chest measurement; 1/3 of an inch to the thigh measurement, and no more than 1/2 of an inch to the waist measurement.
For example, a man who is 6'0" tall would have the following minimum body measurements (these are based on being 10 inches taller than the base height of 5'2"):
Category | Minimum Measurement | Formula |
---|---|---|
Calf | 16.50 inches | 14+(10*.25) |
Upper Arm | 16.50 inches | 14+(10*.25) |
Neck | 16.50 inches | 14+(10*.25) |
Chest | 45.50 inches | 38+(10*.75) |
Thigh | 24.25 inches | 21+(10*.33333) |
Waist | 33.00 inches | 28+(10*.5) |
Now get an average of the measurements from both methods to know the approximate minimum body measurements you should be shooting for.
Body Part | Method 1 | Method 2 | Average |
---|---|---|---|
Chest | 42.25 inches | 45.50 inches | 43.75 inches |
Hips | 36.00 inches | n/a | 36.00 inches |
Waist | 29.50 inches | 33.00 inches | 31.25 inches |
Thigh | 22.25 inches | 24.25 inches | 23.25 inches |
Neck | 15.75 inches | 16.50 inches | 16.00 inches |
Upper Arm | 15.25 inches | 16.50 inches | 15.75 inches |
Calves | 14.25 inches | 16.50 inches | 15.25 inches |
Forearms | 12.25 inches | n/a | 12.25 inches |
